It was a sunny day back then. I remember my mother and sister standing in front of their houses. I had a 1957 Chevy! White and Turquoise. Four doors and 327 with a four barrel. Hollywood 's on and it purred like a Lion! It was June 5th 1967. Six months prior, I had been in a car accident. I spent 51 days in the hospital. Next two months in a wheel chair and crutches! I did not know at the time of the accident if I would ever walk again. And yet, on this date, I Was to begin a journey that has lasted 45 years, and almost 3 months!
YES-MY FIRST DAY OF WORK!
NOW THE HEADLINES READ-SEN. SCHUMMER TRYING TO SAVE PLANT CLOSING!
I SPENT 32 YEARS HERE. I KNOW ALMOST ALL THESE PEOPLE. SOME ARE GREAT FRIENDS-SOME , I JUST KNOW. BUT- WE WERE ALL FAMILY WHEN IT CAME TO PUSH OR SHOVE!
You see, we are now part of a huge company- Mohawk industries. And in these economic times, some tough decisions have to be made.
We have a sister plant in Gettysburg that makes the same product. We also have plants in Mexico that produce similar products. There is not enough sales to support all the factories- so one must shut down!
MY HEART STAYS ON SOUTH CLARK STREET IN LITTLE OLEAN NEW YORK. THIS IS WHERE I CUT MY TEETH SO TO SPEAK, AND THIS IN MY OPINION, IS THE ONE THAT SHOULD STAY. ALMOST 100 YEARS THIS HAS BEEN HERE. IT WAS AND STILL IS A CLASS ACT. THESE ARE NOT EASY JOBS. THEY ARE PHYSICAL-HOT-DIRTY-THEY REQUIRE A FORTITUDE OF COMMITMENT. IT IS LABOR TO THE UTMOST- YET IT IE REWARDING TO SEE A FINISHED PRODUCT.
ON YOUR JOURNEYS AROUND THE COUNTRY AND THE WORLD, JUST NOTICE THE LITTLE TWO INCH AND ONE INCH TILES. JUST NOTICE THE BEAUTIFUL MURALS THAT MAKE THE PICTURES YOU SEE COME TO LIFE. YES FOLKS, IN ALMOST ALL CASES, IT PROBABLY CAME FROM THE TILE PLANT AS IT IS SO FONDLY CALLED.
YOU SEE, IN SUCH A SMALL COMMUNITY- THIS ISN'T ONLY A JOB- IT IS A GENERATION TYPE THING. I HAVE KNOWN GRAND FATHERS- SONS AND GRANDSONS WHO ALL WORKED HERE FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIVES- SOME ALL AT THE SAME TIME!
WHEN I SPOKE OF FAMILY- THAT IS THE TRUE MEANING FOR FAMILY TIES. IT WAS PASSED SOWN FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT FOR ALMOST 100 YEARS. A CENTURY IN THE MAKING.
A LOT OF PEOPLE WERE CHOSEN TO GO ON TO OTHER PLACES IN THE ORGANIZATION FROM LITTLE OLEAN. WHY? BECAUSE THEY KNEW THIS WAS THE BEST OF THE BEST. WHEN YOU WORKED HERE, YOU WERE COMMITTED. YOU LEARNED THE JOB AND YOU FOLLOWED THE RULES. THAT IS JUST WHAT IT IS IN THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY. THE WORK ETHIC IS SECOND TO NONE.
I HOPE AND PRAY THAT WHEN THE CHOICE IS MADE- THAT THIS LITTLE TOWN HAS A PLACE FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS FOR THE TILE PLANT- FOR IT IS INGRAINED INTO THIS COMMUNITY-IT IS A FIXTURE ON STATE STREET- EVERY ONE KNOWS WHERE IT IS AND EVERY ONE KNOWS ITS NAME!
SO AS I END- PLEASE KEEP THESE FOLKS IN YOUR PRAYERS-CROSS YOUR FINGERS OR WHAT EVER YOU DO- JUST REMEMBER 174 PEOPLE WORK HERE. THEY ALL ARE COMMITTED AND ROOTED INTO THE COMMUNITY.
Sen. Schumer trying to save Dal-Tile
WITH FLAYS GENTLY WAVING IN THE BREEZE- OLEAN TILE COMPANY AS IT HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR ALMOST 100 YEARS.
HAVE A GREAT DAY- GO IN PEACE- AND KEEP THOSE THOUGHT AND PRAYERS
GOING- I KNOW I WILL!
